LOS ANGELES, CA (March 22nd, 2014) L.A. Artcore presents the work of Barry Shaffer and Toban Nichols presenting visitors with the opportunity to observe how dramatically different approaches to making art rooted in the powerful, mind-altering visualization of landscapes can be. Each artist operates from a personal vision that invites us to take new, considered look at a familiar arena of art.
Barry Shaffer creates his artwork in direct connection with humanitarian aims. Whether traveling with Global Humanitarian Expeditions to provide dentistry to people without access, or at home working with organizations like the Exceptional Children’s Foundation, he combines adventure with artistry to create involved social documents. As a photographer his eye seeks balance for his compositions, infusing them with reflective meaning; adding a sensitivity to nature he creates links to the present passage of time. In a previous exhibit, his work focused on portraits of L.A. residents aged 80 and over, called Quiet Heroes. In this project, Ancient Temples – Current Conflicts, purposeful contrasting views of landscapes, ruins and living people offers viewers a chance to connect to people facing conflict across the globe through both eyes and heart.
Toban Nichols is a highly experimental new media artist working with video installations and prints, in this exhibit employing elements of interactive media, glitch and artificial intelligence to shape and reintroduce us to the landscape. Streaming landscapes layered with mirrored distortions that suggest action as much as the presence of water, geometric inclusions that play with existing colors to tease and intensify the involvement of the brain, and the tangible presence of technology can be found in the work. Nichols has exhibited internationally, SCOPE New York and Basel, the Digital Fringe Festival in Melbourne, Australia, and the Seattle Art Museum.
