Allan Sekula (1951-2013) was an influential writer, photographer and educator whose documentary style photographs were imbued with political and social critiques. His early works, though integral to his development as an artist and as a thinker, are not often exhibited, so this exhibition of works created near the start of his career in the early 1970s and 1980s enable a welcome revisiting of the ironic humor and wit that he continued to develop and sharpen throughout his remarkable career. On view are seminal pieces such as "This Ain’t China” (1974), a work depicting the class struggle of kitchen workers; "School is a Factory" (1978-80), "Meditations on a Triptych," (1973-78) and "Long Beach Notes” (1980), as well as a video entitled "Reagan Tape".
