Marco Brambilla
Christopher Grimes Gallery, Santa Monica, California
Recommendation by Jody Zellen

Marco Brambilla, ''Creation (Megaplex),'' 2012, 3D high-definition video, color, sound, 4 minute (loop), edition of 8.

Continuing through December 22, 2012

Marco Brambilla has been exploring the expansive possibilities of 3D video. The Santa Monica Museum presented a survey of his work in 2011 that included 3D projections of "Civilization (Megaplex)" (2008) and "Evolution (Megaplex)" (2010). The third video in the trilogy now arrives. Titled "Creation (Megaplex)," it uses groundbreaking 3D technology that allows for a surreal illusion of depth and a vivid crispness of image.

In the darkened gallery space, wearing 3D glasses, characters carefully isolated from their context, including recognizable moments from movies, descend a rotating spiral into the void. Figures from films as well as pop culture and consumer culture including Julie Andrews as Maria von Trapp in "The Sound of Music," Superman, Bob's Big Boy and Randy's Donuts disappear into the multi-colored atmospheric spiral. In contrast to the high tech production of "Creation (Megaplex)" is a new black and white video entitled "Atlantis" that captures the mythological continent's final moments as a functioning space craft before it was shipped to the museum. This three minute loop presents a degraded image akin to a distant transmission that echoes communications from afar.
