SoLA Contemporary is an artist-run, nonprofit organization located in the Crenshaw district of Los Angeles supporting advanced explorations in contemporary art by displaying creative perspectives on our diverse culture. SoLA expands art knowledge to the local community with an Art Education Outreach program designed to foster creative thinking through several programming initiatives and community engagement, including local portfolio reviews, free artist-led workshops for community members and lessons in art-making for the homeless. SoLA is also devoted to community building on an international level, offering bi-annual, month-long residencies and exhibitions for international artists.
President: Lore Eckelberry is an international contemporary artist based in Los Angeles, California. She has worked with many LA art organizations and will bring her expertise in organizing international art exchanges and fundraising.
Vice President: Linda Jo Russell was born, raised and educated in Southern California and has pursued parallel careers as art educator and artist. She now teaches in the Otis College of Art and Design. Linda Jo has donated the new South Los Angeles Gallery to SBC and will help develop it with a studio and a common area for workshops. She brings her academic expertise.
Treasurer: Nicholette Kominos has a BFA in Studio Art and a BA in Psychology from Southern Illinois University. She lives and works as an artist in the Los Angeles area. She worked many years as curatorial assistant and in art education at LA Municipal Gallery at Barnsdall Park. She currently manages a fabrication studio in Los Angeles.
Secretary: Shelley Heffler was born and raised in the Bronx, NY. She was educated at Fashion Institute of Technology and has a masters degree in fine art from CSU Northridge. She has had a career as an art instructor and is an exhibiting artist with an art studio located in Inglewood.
Director: Ben Zask was raised in Brooklyn, NY. He has been involved in running art galleries (BZ framing, Zask Gallery, SBC) since moving to LA in the 1980s. He is an assemblage artist with a studio in Rancho Palos Verdes. He works for SBC SoLA as preparator and curator.
Director: Steve Shriver is a professional artist and teacher with 30 years experience in the field. Member of Palos Verdes Art Center for 3 years, Member of Education Committee, Institute for Classical Architecture and Art.
Director: Paul Corneil is an avid art collector and supporter of the arts in the South Bay area. Paul was educated as a physical scientist but now considers himself (in the Twelve-Step lingo) a recovering intellectual. He’s been interested in art since childhood and has taught photography at college but isn’t coordinated.
Executive Director / Curator: Peggy Sivert is an artist, art educator and founder of SBC and SoLA Gallery. She has run Zask Gallery since 2006 and founded and run another non profit by the same name (SBC) in the early 90s. Her mixed media sculpture has been shown throughout Los Angeles and internationally.
