After World War II, Wright became fascinated by Japanese art. He spent a period in Kyoto working with a master of traditional Japanese woodblock techniques, to create a portfolio of twenty haiga, or illustrations to haiku poems.

Phil Dike: At the Edge of the Sea
A retrospective showing paintings in oil and watercolor from the 1920s to the early 1980s, accompanied by a full-color book reproducing not only the works in the exhibition, but additional works in all media—prints, drawings, paintings, and murals.

California Mexicana: Missions to Murals, 1820–1930
This exhibition demonstrates how a unique amalgam of Mexican and Anglo visual traditions created a profile for California distinct from any other U.S. state.


Laguna Art Museum is a museum of American art with a special focus on the art of California.  Its purpose is to provide the public with exposure to art and to promote understanding of the role of art and artists in American culture through collection, conservation, exhibition, research, scholarship and education.  Working within the tradition of the oldest cultural institution in Orange County, Laguna Art Museum documents regional art and places it in a national context.  The Museum maintains its historic ties to the community and is responsive, accessible, and relevant to the area’s diverse population.
