Painting Architecture

Culver Center of the Arts
September 1 - December 29, 2018

A group exhibition of painters who explore elements of architecture, such as volume, façade, circulation of people, built environment, public and private spaces, and utility. The artists consider the differences of presence and encounter between the frontal emphasis of a painting versus the spatial depth of architecture. They also explore the tension between architecture’s ties to function and a paintings repudiation of practical usefulness beyond reference to itself and its experience. The artists also explore the transformative power of the abstraction of paint itself in relationship to the image represented. The exhibition features the work of Kevin Appel, Sarah Cain, Andy Kolar, and T. Kelly Mason.

Painting Architecture is organized by the Barbara & Art Culver Center of the Arts at UCR ARTS and is curated by Tyler Stallings. UCR's College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences and the City of Riverside provide support for UCR ARTS programs.
