Lavi Daniel presents a series of abstract color paintings & drawings for his 4th exhibition with Rosamund Felsen Gallery. The work is informed by a deep admiration for specific non-Western textiles he & his former wife Diane (now deceased) dealt in. Through their efforts they were successful at placing them in the permanent collections of major art museums throughout the world. The recent works expand on designs found in Mbuti drawings made on pounded bark cloth, and the patterning of Kuba textiles, all made by the women of their tribes. Daniel has been profoundly influenced by their form and composition with gestures & markings painted over, under, around & through one another. At times, the works imply pictorial imagery. Meditations on the diversity of New Guinea’s Paradisaeidae (birds-of-paradise) also inspire Daniel to explore a kaleidoscopic range of color in building complex abstract compositions of rhythm and pattern.
Lavi Daniel first showed with the gallery in 2009. He has had a one artist exhibition at the Orange County Museum of Art, Honolulu Academy of Arts, Long Beach Museum of Art and Santa Monica Museum of Art. He has also had a retrospective at the Armory Center for the Arts, Pasadena.
