Opening Reception: Friday, January 27, 6-8pm
University Art Museum (UAM), California State University, Long Beach. Free and open to the public - no RSVP required. The UAM, CSULB fuses the worlds of visual art and music in three concurrent exhibitions that bring new light to performance spaces. Join the UAM in celebrating the premieres of three new exhibitions:
Lou Reed, Metal Machine Music: The Creation of the Universe, the world premiere of the musician's Arup SoundLab Installation
Metal Machine Trio: The Creation of the Universe
The University Art Museum (UAM), CSULB presents the world premiere audio installation of Metal Machine Trio: The Creation of the Universe. This “soundscape” will allow museum visitors to hear a groundbreaking composition exactly as Mr. Reed heard it while performing onstage. This 3-D re-creation is made possible through collaboration on the recording and reproduction process with acoustics specialists at Arup using their “ambisonic” process perfected in the Arup SoundLab®. Co-curated by UAM, CSULB Director, Chris Scoates, and Martin Fleischmann of Rum & Humble, this exhibit is the second in the What Is Recorded Energy: talk/art/performance (WIRE:t/a/p) series that focuses on the frontier of new sonic creation.
About the Arup SoundLab® Installation
The installation in the Project Room at the UAM will use a 12 loudspeaker spherical array to create a fully immersive 3D sound environment. Reed himself mixed over-modulated feedback and guitar effects at varying speeds to create an ebb and flow of organic atonality that is only experienced on stage. The modulated din of this deep sound flow becomes meditative noise art over the course of the hour-long recording.
