Los Angeles Steel Sculptor at LA ArtCore in May

Prolific stainless steel sculptor Wendell Dayton is exhibiting with two other artists at the LA Artcore Brewery Annex May 3rd through 31st 2015. The public is expressly invited to a Reception for the Artist on May 3rd from 1 to 3 pm, as well as a Conversation with the Artist at 2pm.

The late Harry Abrams, celebrated art book publisher, recognized Dayton's endeavor when he said:

"Wendell Dayton is one of those unusual sculptors who not only has a great technical facility but also possesses that rare gift of creativity in harmony with our contemporary environment."

Dayton has been an artist his whole life, with an early interest in drawing and painting, then attending art school for college and living the life of a New York loft artist in the 60s. It was in 1962 that he switched from primarily painting to avant-garde sculpture work. Using materials from the streets and building demolition sites, soon he began welding sculpture, with the same materials. Later he found inspiration using structural lumber and placing them on the roof of his loft; dowels, notches and ropes were the methods of assembly.

Throughout the years he went back to using new steel and then large stainless steel which became his major medium to the present. As well, Dayton continued drawing and watercolor work which became a prominent medium for him at intervals. He currently creates in his largest studio yet – with an "infinite roof" – set on a two-acre lot in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains and is proceeding with stainless steel pieces.

Prominent American writer, Russell Salamon, said of Wendell:

"In artists we see the health of the universes. Our own worlds take hope and take off in flights of imagination."

This is Wendell's third show at the Artcore Brewery Annex located in downtown LA.

The Los Angeles Times described the Artcore as:

"One of L.A.'s best and most adventurous arts institutions, the LA Artcore Center promotes art that captures the culturally diverse spirit of the city."
