Mysterious, ethereal, and often skeletal in nature, Ann Morris’s vessels use organic materials such as seaweed, sinew, twigs, wasp nest paper, and leather to embrace the inevitability of transformation and muse on the entanglement of life and death. With exposed framework, their construction echoes that of old boats, which are air filled, can be seen through, hung or balanced on a finger. The suspended installation of quietly drifting vessels creates a dramatic interplay of cast shadows that heighten their otherworldly quality. Morris constructs from found materials, which she gathers and assembles with a keen eye for unique colors and textures. Though created on the same jig, each boat assumes its own form dictated by its individual components, inviting subtle changes in the color and shape over time. Each vessel is unique.
