The opening reception for Gettin' Off the Ground's three new exhibitions will take place on September 14th, 2014 from 3:00pm-5:00pm. Gallery walkthrough at 3:30pm.

Angels Gate Cultural Center (AGCC) is thrilled to invite you to the launch of a new round of exhibitions that continue to explore how stories within the community shape the collective consciousness in San Pedro and the South Bay area. The 2013-2015 exhibition year is titled: Gettin' Off the Ground: Contemporary Stories from an American Community and is dedicated to exhibiting work that acts as a catalyst for the exchange of dialogue, experiences, culture, and community. This current iteration of the Gettin' off the Ground series focuses on presenting work by AGCC studio artists, regional/national artists, and members of the community in partnership with Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy (LAANE) to show the work that engages the current conversation on community.

On October 4th from 1-3pm the gallery will bring artists, organizations and labor activists together for a conversation titled "Art as Action: Art is Action". The conversation will explore how art is used within different sectors to better understand the human condition.

COMMUNITY GALLERY: Solitude to Solidarity: A Journey of Our Collective Consciousness - is in partnership with LAANE and combines the inspiring work of Beatriz Rios-Nava with residents from the South Bay/Los Angeles Harbor region.

Solitude to Solidarity: A Journey of Our Collective Consciousness
AGCC and LAANE have partnered with Beatriz Rios-Nava to share the stories of people who work in the Port of Los Angeles. Solitude to Solidarity is a community art project that aims to unify the community through art and the sharing of their own dreams and inspirations. Beatriz Rios-Nava, 57, has been driving trucks for 10 years. Since starting with a company at the port in Long Beach, she has passed the long hours of waiting in shipping yard queues by taking phone-camera snapshots of her environment: her morning coffee and bread nestled on the dashboard of her truck, and her co-workers picketing for unionization outside of their company. Her story along with the stories of residents from the South Bay/Los Angeles Harbor region will be featured in Community Gallery.

Roundtable IV

The Community Room will feature work by AGCC studio artists selected by the LACAC intern, Shelby Roberts.
