Amy Casey, ''Wedge,'' 2012, acrylic on panel, 12 x 12''.

Continuing through March 21, 2012

Houses, stacked precariously high or bundled together and swinging through the air, are the unifying feature in Cleveland-based artist Amy Casey’s new work (all 2012, acrylic on panel). Casey began creating these house paintings in 2007, a response to both natural disaster and her recurring dream of apocalyptic demise, as well as her fascination with resilience and the determination to rebuild in the face of disaster.

Ten such works, which range in their modest size from 12 x 12 to 30 x 24 inches, with several in between, comprise this intimate show. Once again, Casey demonstrates delightful attention to detail—every brick, every window, every door is meticulously rendered. This work, even more so than the last show here, in 2009, is tight; even as houses teeter or are suspended in space, supported by ribbons of roadway, fences or each other, there is a sense that, implausible as it may seem, these homes will succeed in fulfilling their purpose: to serve as oases in a chaotic and unpredictable world. And while these new works do not differ a great deal from Casey’s last exhibition here, it remains a pleasure to appreciate her artistic skill and explore these impossibly fantastical worlds.
